Purse string sutures are sewn around the ring for making the opening smaller this helps the leaflets to meet again on closure of the valve. Sometimes while repairing the annulus it becomes essential to fix an annuloplasty ring where the leaflets meet the fibrous annulus to abnormally enlarge the valve opening so that the leaflets can get together properly.
